Behind the screen

Many of the environmental impacts associated with the screen production industry relate to activities behind the screen, such as makeup, wardrobe, art department, lighting, sound and camera, and post-production. Below are suggestions for minimising the environmental impacts associated with many of the behind screen activities.


Sound and camera

Unplug video players, television monitors and other similar equipment with stand-by mode when not in use.
When purchasing or hiring technical equipment, ask about energy-efficient alternatives or enquire about more efficient ways to use technical equipment.
Where quality allows, use digital processes for filming and sound recording.
Use rechargeable batteries


Opportunities for reducing the environmental impact of camera and sound activities are limited, however, by implementing energy efficient working practices, questioning suppliers on the most energy efficient equipment available and having an awareness of the environmental impact of productions, the message will catch on.
